Skrei is Norwegian Arctic cod (Gadus morhua), which has the highest nutritional value of all cod species. It's all about the animals being in top condition and preparing for a tough journey.

Every year between January and April, the Norwegian coast awakens to new life as millions of large, mature fish embark on their annual journey from the Barents Sea back to their spawning grounds around the Norwegian Lofoten Islands. The fish is about five years old when it reaches adulthood and is ready to undertake this journey.
The name "skrei" comes from Old Norse and means "to move forward or wander".
 New generations of cod return to the Barents Sea via natural ocean currents after spawning to mature, and one day, when fully grown, return to the Lofoten area to repeat the cycle.
