The 2021 Boekenhoutskloof The Chocolate Block is an expressive red wine from the Franschhoek region of South Africa. This wine is an intriguing blend of Syrah (74%), Grenache (10%), Cinsault (8%), Cabernet Sauvignon (7%), and Viognier (1%). Intense aromas of blackberry, bramble, and lavender dominate the nose, complemented by subtle hints of potting soil and cured meat. Inviting scents of pitted cherries, plums, white pepper, and tobacco leaf complete the bouquet. On the palate, the wine shows medium body with silky tannins, juicy and savory with well-ripened red and black fruits and subtle spice and cocoa notes.

The Boekenhoutskloof winery was established in 1776 and is situated in the furthest corner of the picturesque Franschhoek Valley. The name of the estate means "Ravine of the Boekenhout" (an indigenous Cape Beech tree species prized for furniture making). Boekenhoutskloof is renowned for its Syrah specialization and its range of premium wines that sell out with every release. "The Chocolate Block" in particular, a Syrah-based blend, ranks among South Africa's most successful new wine offerings in the modern era. The winery was named Winery of the Year in 2012 by influential South African wine journalist John Platter and is one of South Africa's most highly regarded estates.
