Teriyaki Tempeh

If we had to describe this Teriyaki Tempeh in one word, it would be "irresistible". There's nothing bland about this plant-based, protein-packed dish, and it's ready in under an hour. Sound tempting?

55 min

Serves: 2

Ingredients

  • 1 package Better Nature Organic Tempeh (200g)
  • 1 tablespoon olive or coconut oil

Marinade:

  • 3 tablespoons vegetable broth
  • 1 tablespoon tamari or soy sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder

Teriyaki Sauce:

  • 4 tablespoons tamari (or soy sauce)
  • 1 teaspoon sesame or olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup
  • 1 teaspoon Sriracha (or hot sauce)
  • 1 teaspoon rice wine or apple cider vinegar
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon cornstarch
  • 1/4 teaspoon liquid smoke (optional)

For serving:

  • Sesame seeds
  • Spring onions

Instructions

  1. Cut the tempeh into triangles or squares.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together all the marinade ingredients. Add the tempeh to the bowl and pour the marinade over it. Marinate for at least 20 minutes.
  3. Heat the olive or coconut oil in a pan and fry the tempeh for 3-5 minutes on each side until crispy.
  4. In a large bowl, whisk together the teriyaki sauce ingredients. Once the tempeh is fried, add the tempeh to the teriyaki sauce, making sure the tempeh is covered.
  5. Remove the tempeh from the sauce (leave the excess sauce in the bowl) and add it back to the pan. Heat the tempeh again for about 30 seconds on each side, so that the sauce caramelises on the tempeh.
  6. Turn off the heat and pour the remaining sauce over the tempeh in the pan. Let it sit for about a minute so that the remaining sauce thickens a bit. Serve with vegetables of your choice and rice, and garnish with sesame seeds and spring onions.

Your extra protein boost with Better Nature Tempeh

They are four friends who love good health hacks. When they came across a wholefood protein that is also high in fibre and gut-friendly prebiotics, they knew they had to spread the word.

Tempeh is made from whole fermented soybeans and has been eaten as a staple in Indonesia for 400 years, so it's well and truly tried and tested.

Half a pack of their tasty tempeh gives you more protein than two eggs and is a great way to up your plant-based protein intake - whether in a stir-fry, salad or smoothie.

Yours truly, Driando, Elin, Chris & Fabio
