Indian farming families grow the traditional variety "Dehradun Type 3" with great manual effort and care and strictly according to the "Code of Practice on Basmati Rice". The seed-resistant variety enables farmers to be independent of patented seeds and hybrid seeds, as they can independently grow new rice plants from the rice of the previous year each year.
