David versus Goliath: How Rewe wants to slow us down on March 8th – and how we will still deliver
Our goal at Knuspr is clear: We want to make our customers' lives easier and more enjoyable. We do this by delivering the weekly shopping stress-free and flexibly directly to the doorstep – without compromising on quality and service. We rely on fresh, high-quality food – from regional treasures to special specialties from around the world.
That's why our team in Berlin was well prepared, even on March 8th – International Women's Day and a public holiday in Berlin – to deliver the entire Berlin city area as usual. So you don't have to inconveniently bring forward your shopping or do it in the days before.
Legally, this is completely fine. Our warehouse, where we assemble all orders for the greater Berlin area, is located in Brandenburg (Schönefeld) – where March 8th is not a public holiday. This means: We are allowed to deliver to our customers in Berlin as on any other day.
But now – at the last minute – Rewe has obtained an injunction against us. They want to prevent us from delivering in Berlin on March 8th, citing "unfair competition". If we do not comply, we face heavy fines.
For us, it's clear: This has nothing to do with fair competition. We are a startup with a fraction of Rewe's billion-dollar revenue – and we just want to deliver our customers' weekly shopping. The revenue we expect on March 8th, Rewe Group makes in 30 seconds (and yes, we calculated it)!
The online grocery market in Germany is still in its infancy – there is enough room for everyone. But instead of promoting innovation and giving people the choice of where and how to shop, Rewe is using its market power to slow us down – not to the benefit of customers, but to protect its own market share.
This is a classic David versus Goliath moment – and it's not just about us. When large, established retailers use their market power to slow down small, innovative competitors, it not only harms the market — it also restricts consumers. Because that means: Less choice, less progress, and less flexibility in shopping.
We at Knuspr will continue to reliably deliver your weekly shopping directly to your doorstep – on Women's Day and every other day.
