The German subsidiary was founded in 1922 in Neumarkt, near Nuremberg, Germany, by the sons Eberhard and Lothar. The company produced the original Blackwing 602 pencil, an instrument that achieved legendary status among writers and animators. The American and German branches of the company separated in 1903 but were reunited in 1987 under the name Faber-Castell. The company was acquired by Staedtler in 1978 and by Faber-Castell USA in 1994. Eberhard Faber IV became CEO and chairman of the company in 1973 and remained in this position until 1987.
