1. WHAT IS WICK VAPORUB AND WHAT IS IT USED FOR?

Wick VapoRub is a cold ointment for rubbing in and/or inhalation. Areas of application: For improving the condition in the case of cold-related respiratory problems (runny nose, hoarseness, inflammation of the bronchial mucosa with symptoms such as coughing and mucus).

2. WHAT SHOULD YOU BE AWARE OF BEFORE USING WICK VAPORUB?

Wick VapoRub must not be used:
  • if you are allergic to levomenthol, racemic camphor, purified turpentine oil, eucalyptus oil or any of the other ingredients of this medicine listed in section 6.
  • on mucous membranes, damaged or inflamed skin, open wounds, burns or in the case of skin and childhood diseases with exanthema.
  • in the case of bronchial asthma and whooping cough, as well as pseudocroup and other respiratory diseases that are accompanied by a pronounced hypersensitivity of the respiratory tract (inhalation can lead to a spasm of the bronchial muscles).
  • in the case of acute pneumonia as inhalation.
  • in infants and toddlers under 2 years of age (risk of laryngospasm).
  • in children under 6 years of age for inhalation.

Warnings and precautions

Please talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using Wick VapoRub. For external use or inhalation only! Do not swallow! Do not use on the face! Avoid contact with eyes, nose and mouth. Do not apply ointment as a fixed bandage and do not use together with heating pads or other types of heat. Overall, care should be taken to clean your hands after rubbing in and to avoid contact with the rubbed-in skin areas afterwards. Otherwise, ointment residues could get into the eyes and cause irritation. When used as

inhalation

do not use with boiling water and never heat in the microwave!

Using Wick VapoRub together with other medicines

Inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking/using, have recently taken/used or intend to take/use any other medicines. Eucalyptus oil induces the foreign substance-degrading enzyme system in the liver. The effects of other medicines can therefore be weakened and/or shortened. This cannot be ruled out in the case of large-scale and/or long-term use due to the absorption of larger amounts of active ingredients through the skin.

Pregnancy and breast-feeding

If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, or if you suspect you may be pregnant or intend to become pregnant, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before using this medicine. Observations on humans and the available data have not yet provided any indication of any harmful effects on the foetus from Wick VapoRub Cold Ointment or its ingredients. In this respect, an increased general risk associated with pregnancy is not to be expected in the case of use during pregnancy. However, use during pregnancy should generally only take place after the doctor has carefully weighed up the benefits and possible side effects for the mother and child (see also section 4. "What side effects are possible"). Wick VapoRub must not be used in the area of the breast of the nursing mother during breast-feeding, as the risk of laryngospasm in the child during drinking cannot be ruled out.

3. HOW SHOULD WICK VAPORUB BE USED?

Always use this medicine exactly as described in this package leaflet or exactly as agreed with your doctor or pharmacist. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure. Wick VapoRub can be used as a rub-in or for inhalation. The recommended dose is

Rub-in

  • Adults and children over 12 years of age: 2 – 4 times a day, a 2 to 3 teaspoon-sized amount.
  • Children aged 6 – 12 years: 2 – 4 times a day, a 1 to 2 teaspoon-sized amount.
  • Children aged 2 – 5 years: 2 – 3 times a day, a ½ to 1 teaspoon-sized amount.

Inhalation

  • Adults and children (not under 6 years of age!): 1 – 2 teaspoons to prepare an inhalation solution.

Type of use

Rub-in

For adults and children aged 6 and over, apply to the chest, throat and back and rub in gently with a massaging motion. For children aged 2 - 5 years, only apply to the chest and back, not in the area of the nose and face. Wearing loose clothing makes it easier to inhale the vapours. Use is particularly recommended before going to bed, as Wick VapoRub releases the essential oils over several hours.

Inhalation

For particularly intensive relief, Wick VapoRub can also be used as inhalation. For adults and children (not under 6 years of age!), put 1 - 2 teaspoons of Wick VapoRub in a bowl or other container with a large surface area. Heat ½ litre of water (never in the microwave) and add very hot, but not boiling, to the container. Vapours will develop that should be inhaled for 10 - 15 minutes. During this time, the water must not be heated any further; do not reheat after use. Do not leave children unattended during inhalation, as there is a risk of scalding. When inhaling, it is advisable to close or cover your eyes to avoid possible irritation of the conjunctiva.

Duration of use

If symptoms persist for longer than 3 - 5 days, in the case of shortness of breath, headaches, fever or purulent/bloody sputum or nasal discharge, a doctor must be consulted urgently. Please talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you have the impression that the effect of Wick VapoRub is too strong or too weak.

If you have used more Wick VapoRub than you should

In the case of incorrect use (non-observance of the contraindications or dosage instructions), remove the ointment with paper towels soaked in cooking oil or baby wipes. If any health problems occur as a result of incorrect use, contact a doctor immediately. If a child accidentally swallows Wick VapoRub, you should contact a doctor immediately who can carry out the necessary treatment. Do not try to induce vomiting. In the case of massive overdose or long-term misuse, kidney damage and damage to the central nervous system (CNS) can occur.

If you have any further questions on the use of this medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

4. WHAT SIDE EFFECTS ARE POSSIBLE?

Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

Possible side effects

Redness, skin irritation, contact eczema and other hypersensitivity reactions of the skin are possible. In the case of inhalation, irritation of the skin, eyes and mucous membranes, coughing, increased spasm of the bronchial muscles and narrowing of the airways with wheezing, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, and asthma-like conditions up to respiratory arrest are possible. Hallucinations and seizures have been reported in isolated cases. No information can be provided on the frequency of these side effects, as there are only very few individual case reports from spontaneous adverse event reports over 30 years, but no data from clinical trials.

Reporting of side effects

If you notice any side effects, contact your doctor or pharmacist. This also applies to side effects not listed in this package leaflet. You can also report side effects directly to the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices, Dept. of Pharmacovigilance, Kurt-Georg-Kiesinger Allee 3, D-53175 Bonn, website: www.bfarm.de. By reporting side effects, you can help to provide more information on the safety of this medicine.

5. HOW SHOULD WICK VAPORUB BE STORED?

Keep this medicine out of the reach of children. Do not use this medicine after the expiry date which is stated on the label/carton after "Use by". The expiry date refers to the last day of the month indicated. Do not store above 25°C. Do not dispose of medicines in wastewater. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of the medicine when you no longer use it. You help to protect the environment.
