Coriander is considered one of the oldest spices as it was already used by the Egyptians. In the 15th century it spread to Northern Europe. In the 17th century it was used in Europe for the production of perfume fragrances.

Its slightly spicy taste with the typically intense aroma makes coriander a very strong spice that can be used in a variety of meat and fish dishes as well as salads and soups. 

But why does coriander taste like soap to some people? 

This "gene effect" affects only 17% of all people in Europe and 3% in Asia. It is probably genetically determined, as a certain gene reacts more sensitively to adelhyd, which is found in both soaps and coriander.
