Elsa and Paul Käfer laid the foundation stone on May 16, 1930, when they opened a ”grocery store with wines, liqueurs and bottled beer” on Amalienstraße in Schwabing. Just three years later, they moved to larger premises on Prinzregentenstraße, corner of Schumannstraße. This is still where the main store is located today. In the 1960s, the sons Gerd and Helmut Käfer took over the established delicatessen with a lunch menu and developed it into a quality- and service-oriented gourmet meeting place.
