Description
B12 Ankermann is a vitamin B12 preparation (antianaemic). Vitamin B12 deficiency, which can manifest itself in maturation disorders of the red blood cells (disorders of haematopoiesis, such as hyperchromic macrocytic megaloblastic anaemia, pernicious anaemia and other macrocytic anaemias) and/or neurological disorders, such as funicular spinal disease (spinal cord damage).
Vitamin B12 deficiency can be caused by prolonged malnutrition and deficiency (e.g. strict vegetarian diet), by disorders in food intake (malabsorption due to insufficient production of intrinsic factor), diseases in the terminal ileum (e.g. sprue), fish tapeworm infestation or "blind loop" syndrome or congenital vitamin B12 transport disorders.
