For thousands of years, frankincense resin has been used in traditional Indian Ayurveda as an incense and also as a food. Frankincense also plays an important role in Christian tradition: frankincense – along with myrrh and gold – was among the gifts of the Three Wise Men from the East to the newborn Jesus child. In the Catholic Church, frankincense is still burned in masses today. The true frankincense resin (Olibanum) is obtained from the frankincense plant Boswellia Serrata. The tree, which grows up to 8 m tall, thrives in arid regions of India, Arabia, and Northeast Africa. The trunk and branches exude a yellowish-brown resin that flows down as a viscous mass, clumps, and hardens. The tree resin tastes slightly bitter and has a pleasant spicy, coniferous scent. Among other things, it is used as an additive in cosmetics, beverages, baked goods, and meat dishes. Frankincense is an extremely valuable source of secondary plant compounds, including bitter substances and triterpenes such as boswellic acids, which can pleasantly enrich human nutrition. Each vegan Boswellia frankincense capsule contains 400 mg of Boswellia Serrata extract with at least 68% boswellic acids. It is a high-quality, standardized frankincense dry extract.
