1. WHAT IS MAGNETRANS FORTE AND WHAT IS IT USED FOR?

Magnetrans forte is a mineral supplement. Magnetrans forte is used in the case of proven magnesium deficiency, if it is the cause of muscle activity disorders (neuromuscular disorders, calf cramps).


2. WHAT SHOULD YOU CONSIDER BEFORE TAKING MAGNETRANS FORTE?

Magnetrans forte must not be taken:

• if you are allergic to magnesium oxide or any of the other ingredients of this medicine listed in section 6.
• if you have severe kidney dysfunction.
• if you suffer from myasthenia gravis (muscle weakness).
• if you are prone to (calcium–)magnesium–ammonium phosphate stones (certain kidney stones).
• if you suffer from excitation conduction disorder between the heart atrium and ventricle (AV block).
• in the case of significant water and salt loss (exsiccosis).

If necessary, your doctor should check by measuring the salts (electrolytes) in your blood whether there is a contraindication due to the state of your mineral balance, such as excess magnesium (hypermagnesemia) or excess potassium (hyperkalemia).

Warnings and precautions

Magnetrans forte should only be taken with special caution and only after consulting your doctor:

• in the case of mild to moderate kidney dysfunction.
• if you are known to be prone to the formation of infected kidney stones during a urinary tract infection.

Use of Magnetrans forte together with other medicines

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or intend to take any other medicines. Magnetrans forte should not be taken at the same time as iron, fluorides or tetracyclines (certain antibiotics), as this can lead to mutual inhibition of absorption in the intestine (enteral resorption). An interval of 2 to 3 hours should therefore be observed between taking magnesium and iron, fluoride or tetracycline preparations. Aminoquinolines (for malaria), quinidine and related substances (for heart rhythm disorders), nitrofurantoin (antibiotic) and penicillamine (for rheumatism) should also not be taken at the same time as magnesium preparations due to the mutual influence on absorption into the body. Magnesium should only be used with caution if you are also taking medicines such as antacids (for heartburn) or laxatives that contain magnesium salts. This applies in particular if you have impaired kidney function.

If aluminium-containing preparations (e.g. antacids for heartburn) are taken at the same time, the aluminium absorption into the body may be increased. Certain antibiotics (aminoglycoside antibiotics), cisplatin (a drug to inhibit cell growth or cell division; cytostatic) and ciclosporin A (to weaken the immune response, e.g. after organ transplants) can lead to increased excretion of magnesium via the kidneys and thus to a reduced effect of Magnetrans forte. The simultaneous use of magnesium and certain antibiotics (aminoglycoside antibiotics) can lead to a deterioration in the function of the autonomic muscles, e.g. the respiratory muscles (difficulty breathing). Magnetrans forte can enhance the effect of certain substances (e.g. pancuronium bromide, succinylcholine halogenide) that are given to induce anaesthesia. The simultaneous administration of calcium and phosphate can lead to a reduced effect of magnesium.

The effect of the following drugs can be weakened by Magnetrans forte:

• Sympathomimetics (cold and heart remedies).
• Cardiac glycosides (heart remedies).

Pregnancy and breast-feeding

If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, or if you suspect you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine. There are no contraindications against taking it during pregnancy and breast-feeding. Reports of harmful effects during pregnancy/breast-feeding in humans have not been received to date. However, experience with the use of magnesium in early pregnancy in humans is very limited. If magnesium is administered shortly before birth, the newborn should be monitored by a doctor for signs of harmful effects (such as respiratory depression, muscle weakness) during the first 24 to 48 hours of life.

Driving and using machines

So far, no effects on the ability to drive and use machines have become known. However, fatigue may occur in the case of high-dose and long-term use of the preparation, which may impair attention (see section 4. What side effects are possible?).

3. HOW TO TAKE MAGNETRANS FORTE?

Always take this medicine exactly as described in this package leaflet or exactly as agreed with your doctor or pharmacist. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.

Unless otherwise prescribed by your doctor, the recommended dose is

Adolescents and adults take 1 capsule each in the morning and evening.

Method of administration

Take the capsule with some liquid (e.g. 1 glass of water).

Duration of use

There is no time limit for taking the medicine, but regular checks of the serum magnesium levels should be carried out by the doctor, especially in the case of impaired kidney function.

If you have taken more Magnetrans forte than you should

If you have taken more Magnetrans forte than you should, please inform your doctor. He/she can decide on any necessary measures.

If you forget to take Magnetrans forte

If you forget to take a capsule, take the next capsule of Magnetrans forte as usual. It is not necessary to take a missed capsule later.

If you stop taking Magnetrans forte

If Magnetrans forte has been prescribed for you, you should only stop taking it after consulting your doctor.

If you have any further questions about the use of this medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

4. WHAT SIDE EFFECTS ARE POSSIBLE?

Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. During the intake of magnesium preparations, hardly any side effects have been observed so far in the case of intact kidney function. High doses can lead to soft stools, which are however harmless, or to gastrointestinal irritation.

Significant side effects or signs to watch out for, and measures to be taken if you are affected

If diarrhoea occurs, treatment should be interrupted temporarily; after the stools have returned to normal, treatment can be continued with a reduced daily dose. In the case of high-dose and long-term use, fatigue may occur, especially in the case of impaired kidney function. This may be an indication that an increased magnesium concentration has already been reached in the blood. In this case, you should reduce the dose or temporarily discontinue Magnetrans forte.

Reporting of side effects

If you notice any side effects, talk to your doctor or pharmacist. This also applies to side effects not listed in this package leaflet. By reporting side effects, you can help to provide more information about the safety of this medicine.

5. HOW SHOULD MAGNETRANS FORTE BE STORED?

Keep this medicine out of the reach of children. Do not use this medicine after the expiry date which is stated on the carton and the blister pack. The expiry date refers to the last day of the month indicated. This medicinal product does not require any special storage conditions. Do not dispose of medicines in wastewater or household waste. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of the medicine when you stop using it. In this way, you help to protect the environment.

What Magnetrans forte contains

The active ingredient is: Heavy magnesium oxide. 1 hard capsule contains 250 mg of heavy magnesium oxide corresponding to 150 mg of magnesium corresponding to 6.2 mmol of magnesium. The other ingredients are microcrystalline cellulose, gelatine, macrogol 4000, sodium dodecyl sulphate, purified water, iron(III) hydroxide oxide x H2O (E172), iron (II,III) oxide (E172), iron(III) oxide (E172), titanium dioxide (E171).

What Magnetrans forte looks like and contents of the pack

Caramel-coloured, opaque capsule. Magnetrans forte is available in packs of 20, 50 and 100 hard capsules.
