WHAT ARE LACTOFEM LACTIC ACID VAGINAL SUPPOSITORIES AND WHAT ARE THEY COMPOSED OF?
Lactofem Lactic Acid Vaginal Suppositories are suppositories for use in the vagina, which contain a lactic acid-sodium lactate mixture. The vaginal suppositories can be used to maintain or regulate the natural pH value in the vagina:

• in adult women
• during pregnancy and breastfeeding
• in girls after consultation with a doctor.

In case of a tendency to vaginal infections, a preventive long-term treatment can be carried out without hesitation (see "How long can you use Lactofem Lactic Acid Vaginal Suppositories?"). Lactofem Lactic Acid Vaginal Suppositories contain (S)-lactic acid, sodium-(S)-lactate solution, macrogol 1500 and macrogol 6000. The suppositories are free of paraffin, petroleum jelly and other fats.

WHAT ARE LACTOFEM LACTIC ACID VAGINAL SUPPOSITORIES USED FOR?
Lactofem Lactic Acid Vaginal Suppositories are used to maintain and restore a natural pH value in the vagina. Maintaining or acidifying the vaginal environment with lactic acid supports the growth of typical vaginal bacteria (lactic acid-producing bacteria) and at the same time has an unfavourable effect on the growth of pathogens in the vaginal area. Lactofem Lactic Acid Vaginal Suppositories can therefore be used preventively in case of a tendency to vaginal infections and in addition to a medicinal treatment of vaginal infections.

HOW DO LACTOFEM LACTIC ACID VAGINAL SUPPOSITORIES WORK?
The cells in the vaginal mucosa contain glycogen, which is released after the normal desquamation of the cells via lactic acid bacteria in the vagina and fermented into lactic acid after the breakdown of sugars by the lactic acid bacteria. If there is sufficient lactic acid, the vagina has a naturally acidic environment with a pH value of 3.8 - 4.5. These are unfavourable conditions for the growth of unwanted bacteria. Therefore, an acidic vaginal environment helps to prevent bacterial infections. The acidic vaginal environment can be disturbed by various external factors, so that the pH value rises above 4.5. Possible influencing factors are body secretions such as menstrual blood or seminal fluid, a reduction of lactobacilli by antibiotics as well as hormonal fluctuations during pregnancy, breastfeeding or due to the use of female sex hormones. Under such conditions, the growth of unwanted germs in the vagina is favoured. These germs can originate from the environment of the vaginal opening (e.g. anal region) and ascend into the vagina or be transmitted, for example, during sexual intercourse. The consequences can be an overgrowth of the natural lactobacillus flora by these germs and a vaginal infection. In women who tend to have repeated vaginal infections, the vaginal application of lactic acid is helpful in many cases to support the self-regulation of the acidic pH value.

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO CONSIDER WHEN USING LACTOFEM LACTIC ACID VAGINAL SUPPOSITORIES?
Lactofem Lactic Acid Vaginal Suppositories are very well tolerated. There are no special precautions to be taken when using them. However, if you know that you are hypersensitive to any of the ingredients, you should not use the vaginal suppositories. In girls, Lactofem Lactic Acid Vaginal Suppositories should only be used after consultation with a doctor, as there is not yet sufficient experience for a general recommendation for use in children and adolescents. Lactofem Lactic Acid Vaginal Suppositories should not be used during menstrual bleeding. Discontinue treatment on these days. If you are currently suffering from a vaginal infection (e.g. increased discharge, unpleasant odour of the discharge, itching and burning at the vaginal opening), you should consult your doctor to clarify your symptoms and the appropriate treatment before using Lactofem Lactic Acid Vaginal Suppositories. Treatment with a medicine or additional treatment of your partner may be necessary.
If vaginal symptoms worsen or do not improve within 8 days while using Lactofem Lactic Acid Vaginal Suppositories, you should stop using the product and consult a doctor. Lactofem Lactic Acid Vaginal Suppositories do not contain a spermicidal agent (no agent that kills male semen) and therefore do not protect against unwanted pregnancy. Lactofem Lactic Acid Vaginal Suppositories are used exclusively locally. You should not use Lactofem Lactic Acid Vaginal Suppositories at the same time as another vaginally administered preparation such as vaginal suppositories or creams, so that the effects do not interfere with each other. It is not known whether and to what extent the suppositories can impair the effect of vaginally used contraceptives. Lactofem Lactic Acid Vaginal Suppositories and condoms should not be used at the same time so that the suppositories can take effect. In addition, the tear resistance may be reduced and thus the safety of condoms may be impaired. In case of damage to the foil strip or a change in the consistency of the suppositories, do not use the product and inform the manufacturer.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Lactofem Lactic Acid Vaginal Suppositories can also be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

IN WHAT DOSAGE SHOULD LACTO-FEM LACTIC ACID VAGINAL SUPPOSITORIES BE USED?
The single dose is one vaginal suppository once a day in the evening before going to bed.

HOW SHOULD YOU USE LACTOFEM LACTIC ACID VAGINAL SUPPOSITORIES?
One vaginal suppository is inserted deep into the vagina once a day - preferably lying on your back with your legs slightly bent. To prevent premature expulsion of the vaginal suppository, it should be used in the evening before going to bed.

Vaginal opening

To remove the vaginal suppository from the foil strip, please pull the two foils apart at the tip of the suppository. If the vagina is relatively dry, the vaginal suppository can be moistened under running water before insertion to make it even easier to insert. Please use a panty liner during use, as the vaginal suppositories dissolve particularly well and watery discharge may occasionally occur.

HOW LONG CAN YOU USE LACTOFEM LACTIC ACID VAGINAL SUPPOSITORIES?
The duration of use is generally 5 - 7 days. For regular maintenance of a normal pH value in the vagina, e.g. in women with a tendency to vaginal infections, Lactofem Lactic Acid Vaginal Suppositories can also be used without hesitation over a longer period of time two to three times a week. In case of persistent or recurring symptoms, please seek medical advice. If you have any further questions about the use, please contact your doctor or pharmacist.

WHAT SIDE EFFECTS ARE POSSIBLE?
In rare cases, mild skin reactions (e.g. redness, burning, itching) may occur. In individual cases, an allergic skin reaction (e.g. severe redness, swelling, burning) may occur. If you observe any other unpleasant effects, please talk to your doctor or pharmacist. Please report any serious incidents that have occurred in connection with Lactofem Lactic Acid Vaginal Suppositories to the manufacturer and the competent authority in your country.

HOW LONG ARE LACTOFEM LACTIC ACID VAGINAL SUPPOSITORIES SHELF-LIFE?
You must not use Lactofem Lactic Acid Vaginal Suppositories after the expiry date stated on the blister and the folding box. The expiry date refers to the last day of the month indicated. The vaginal suppositories, even if they are not completely used up, can be disposed of with the household waste.

HOW SHOULD LACTOFEM LACTIC ACID VAGINAL SUPPOSITORIES BE STORED?
Keep out of reach of children. Do not store below 1°C and not above 30°C.

Lactofem Lactic Acid Vaginal Suppositories are white vaginal suppositories for use in the vagina. Lactofem Lactic Acid Vaginal Suppositories are available in packs as a trial size with 2 vaginal suppositories (non-saleable sample) or in original size with 7 vaginal suppositories or 14 vaginal suppositories. Not all pack sizes may be marketed.
