Vagisan Lactic Acid Vaginal SuppositoriesFor maintaining and restoring a natural pH value in the vagina by acidification with lactic acid
Please read the following instructions for use carefully, as they contain important information on what to consider when using this medical device. Keep these instructions for use, you may want to read them again later. If you have any questions, please contact your doctor or pharmacist.
Ingredients
Lactic Acid, Macrogol 1500, Macrogol 6000, Sodium Lactate.Areas of application
Vagisan Lactic Acid is used to maintain and restore a natural pH value in the vagina. The acidification of the vaginal environment with lactic acid supports the growth of typical vaginal bacteria (lactic acid-producing lactobacilli = lactic acid bacteria) and at the same time has an unfavourable effect on the growth of pathogens. Vagisan Lactic Acid can therefore be used as a preventive measure for a tendency to vaginal infections and as a supplement to drug treatment of vaginal infections.Product information
Vagisan Lactic Acid are vaginal suppositories that contain a lactic acid-sodium lactate mixture. The vaginal suppositories can be used to maintain or regulate the natural pH value in the vagina in adult women, during pregnancy and breastfeeding and in girls after consultation with a doctor. In case of a tendency to vaginal infections, a preventive long-term treatment can be carried out without hesitation (see "Method of application").What you should know about lactic acid and vaginal infections
The cells in the vaginal lining contain sugar, which is released when the cells are normally shed. The sugar is broken down into lactic acid by the lactic acid bacteria in the vagina. If there is sufficient lactic acid, the vagina has a naturally acidic environment with a pH value of 3.8 - 4.4. These are unfavourable conditions for the growth of unwanted bacteria. Therefore, an acidic vaginal environment helps to prevent bacterial infections. The acidic vaginal environment can be disturbed by various external factors, so that the pH value rises above 4.5. Possible influencing factors are body secretions such as menstrual blood or semen, a reduction in lactobacilli due to antibiotics, hormonal fluctuations during pregnancy, breastfeeding or due to the use of female sex hormones. Under such conditions, the growth of unwanted germs in the vagina is favoured. These germs can originate from the area around the vaginal opening (e.g. anal region) and ascend into the vagina or be transmitted during sexual intercourse, for example. The consequences can be an overgrowth of the natural lactobacillus flora by these germs and a vaginal infection. In women who tend to have repeated vaginal infections, vaginal application of lactic acid is often helpful to support the self-regulation of the acidic pH value.Method of application
One vaginal suppository is inserted deep into the vagina once a day in the evening before going to bed. This is best done lying on your back with your legs slightly bent. To remove a vaginal suppository from the foil, first separate one suppository from the remaining suppositories on the foil strip at the perforation. Then tear open the foil from top to bottom; use the opening aid (V-shaped cut in the foil). You can then push the suppository out of the foil. If the vagina is relatively dry, the vaginal suppository can be moistened under running water before insertion to make it even easier to insert. Please use a panty liner during use, as the vaginal suppositories dissolve particularly well and occasional watery discharge may occur. The duration of use is generally 5 - 7 days. To regularly maintain a normal pH value in the vagina, e.g. in women with a tendency to vaginal infections, Vagisan Lactic Acid can also be used without hesitation over a longer period of time two to three times a week.Use during pregnancy and breastfeeding
Vagisan Lactic Acid can also be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding.Possible side effects
In rare cases, mild skin reactions (e.g. redness, burning, itching) may occur. In individual cases, an allergic skin reaction (e.g. severe redness, swelling, burning) may occur. If you observe any other unpleasant effects, please talk to your doctor or pharmacist.Contraindications
Vagisan Lactic Acid should not be used if you are known to be hypersensitive to any of the ingredients.Restrictions on use
Vagisan Lactic Acid should only be used in girls after consultation with a doctor, as there is not yet sufficient experience for a general recommendation for use in children. Vagisan Lactic Acid should not be used during menstrual bleeding. Stop treatment on these days. If you are currently suffering from a vaginal infection (e.g. increased discharge, unpleasant odour of the discharge, itching and burning at the vaginal opening), you should consult your doctor/gynaecologist to clarify your symptoms and the appropriate treatment before using Vagisan Lactic Acid. Treatment with a medicine or additional treatment of your partner may be necessary. If vaginal symptoms worsen or do not improve within 8 days while using Vagisan Lactic Acid, you should stop using the product and consult a doctor. This applies in particular to women who suffer from severe vaginal dryness (e.g. during and after the menopause). Vagisan Lactic Acid does not contain a spermicidal agent (no agent that kills male semen) and therefore does not protect against unwanted pregnancy. If the foil strip is damaged or the consistency of the suppositories changes, do not use the product and inform the manufacturer.Note on use with condoms
The tear resistance of condoms or pessaries made of latex may be impaired if Vagisan Lactic Acid is used at the same time. Therefore, Vagisan Lactic Acid should not be used at the same time as condoms or pessaries made of latex.Storage and shelf life
Vagisan Lactic Acid should be stored out of reach of children. The expiry date is stated on the flap of the packaging or on the foil strip. Do not use the product after the expiry date stated after the symbol. The expiry date refers to the last day of the month stated. No special storage conditions are required for this product.Pack sizes
