Saline laxative.Dosage form and type of application
Powder for oral solution after dissolving in water.Indications
For short-term use in case of constipation (obstipation). For bowel evacuation before diagnostic and therapeutic measures.Contraindications
Sodium sulfate decahydrate must not be used in case of intestinal obstruction. It should not be used in case of high blood pressure, heart failure, inflammatory gastrointestinal diseases and disorders of the water and electrolyte balance.Pregnancy and lactation
Sodium sulfate decahydrate should not be used during pregnancy, as it can increase the existing tendency to form water retention (edema). No harmful effects of sodium sulfate decahydrate during breastfeeding are known.Dosage and type of application
Unless otherwise prescribed, adults drink 2 to 4 teaspoons (10 to 20 g) of sodium sulfate decahydrate dissolved in approx. 250 ml of water. For rapid bowel evacuation, 1 to 2 tablespoons (20 to 30 g) of sodium sulfate decahydrate dissolved in approx. 500 ml of water are drunk. Children over 6 years of age receive half the dose.Duration of application
Sodium sulfate decahydrate should only be used for a short period of time. Long-term use leads to increased intestinal sluggishness.Overdose
In case of overdose of sodium sulfate decahydrate, water can be withdrawn with electrolyte disturbances. The therapy should be based on the symptoms.Note
Do not store above 25°C. Keep medicines out of reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date.Interactions with other agents
The sensitivity to cardiac glycosides can be increased due to increased potassium losses. Potassium loss can be increased when taken together with diuretics.Side effects
When using very high doses or chronic use of sodium sulfate decahydrate, increased sodium content in the blood, water retention and high blood pressure can occur. As with other laxatives, prolonged use can lead to increased loss of water, potassium and other salts. This can lead to disturbances of the heart function and to muscle weakness, especially when taken together with diuretics and adrenal corticosteroids. For risks and side effects, read the package leaflet and ask your doctor or pharmacist.Note
If you notice any side effects, please contact your doctor or pharmacist. This also applies to side effects not listed on the package leaflet.
