Vegetable stimulant laxative.Indications
For short-term use in case of constipation.Contraindications
When should you not take refined castor oil?Refined castor oil should not be used in case of intestinal obstruction, acute inflammatory bowel diseases (e.g. Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis or appendicitis), abdominal pain of unknown origin, biliary tract diseases and in case of severe fluid deficiency in the body with loss of water and salts.
What should you consider during pregnancy and breastfeeding?
There is only insufficient data available on the use during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Refined castor oil should therefore not be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
What should be considered for children and the elderly?
Children under 10 years of age must not take refined castor oil.
Precautions for use and warnings
What precautions should be taken?Taking stimulant laxatives beyond the short-term use can lead to increased intestinal sluggishness. Refined castor oil should only be used if a change in diet or bulking agents do not have a laxative effect.
Interactions with other drugs
Which drugs affect the effect of refined castor oil?In case of continuous use or misuse, potassium deficiency can increase the effect of certain drugs that strengthen the heart muscle (cardiac glycosides) and influence the effect of drugs against cardiac arrhythmias. Potassium losses can be increased by the simultaneous use of certain drugs that increase urine output (thiazide diuretics), adrenal corticosteroids or liquorice root. The laxative effect of refined castor oil can be reduced by taking antihistamines. The absorption of fat-soluble vitamins can be inhibited. Please note that this information may also apply to drugs that have been used recently.
Dosage, type and duration of use
The following information applies unless your doctor has prescribed refined castor oil differently. Please follow the instructions for use, otherwise refined castor oil will not work properly. How much and how often should you take refined castor oil?
Unless otherwise prescribed: Adults and children over 10 years of age take 1/2 to one whole tablespoon of refined castor oil (5 -10 ml) as a single dose. The individually correct dosage is the lowest required to obtain a soft-formed stool.
How and when should you take refined castor oil?
Refined castor oil should be taken in the morning on an empty stomach.
How long should you take refined castor oil?
Refined castor oil should not be taken for longer than 2 weeks without medical advice.
Overdose and other application errors
What should you do if refined castor oil has been taken in too large quantities? In case of accidental or intentional overdose, nausea, vomiting, painful intestinal cramps and severe diarrhoea with the consequence of loss of water and salts can occur. In case of overdose, please inform a doctor immediately. He will decide which countermeasures (e.g. administration of fluid and electrolytes) are necessary, if any.Side effects
What side effects can occur when using refined castor oil?In rare cases, skin rashes may occur. In this case, you should stop taking the medicine. Furthermore, stomach irritation, nausea, vomiting, painful intestinal cramps and severe diarrhoea can occur occasionally at higher doses. In these cases, a dose reduction is necessary. In case of chronic use/misuse, increased loss of water and salts (electrolyte losses), especially potassium, can occur. This can lead to disturbances of the heart function and to muscle weakness. Note: If you notice any side effects, please contact your doctor or pharmacist. This also applies to side effects not listed in this package leaflet. You can also report side effects directly to the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices, Dept. of Pharmacovigilance, Kurt-Georg-Kiesinger Allee, D-53175 Bonn, website: www.bfarm.de. By reporting side effects, you can help to provide more information about the safety of this medicine.
