Make your own corn dogs: The cult snack
Golden brown and extremely crispy on the outside, juicy and hot on the inside: corn dogs are the ultimate snack for parties, after work, or your next movie night munchies. Find out here how to make the American classic and the trendy Korean corn dog yourself in no time.
The US classic: What makes the perfect corn dog?
American street food markets would be unthinkable without them: The corn dog is a sausage on a wooden skewer that is dipped in a thick cornmeal batter and then deep-fried. The result is a crispy-sweet coating that harmonises perfectly with the savoury, juicy filling. For a thoroughly successful result, you need snappy Wiener sausages, fine flour, and the right frying oil.
1. Dry preparation
Pat the sausages thoroughly dry with paper towels. Lightly coat them in a little wheat flour before dipping so that the batter sticks perfectly.
2. The cornmeal trick
Real cornmeal gives the coating its characteristic yellow color, unique crunch, and slightly sweet corn flavor.
3. Use a tall glass
Pour the batter into a tall drinking glass. This allows you to coat the skewered sausages evenly in a single motion.
Step-by-step: How to make corn dogs
With these simple steps, preparation is a breeze. All you need is 20 minutes and your appetite.
Skewer the sausages
Insert sturdy wooden skewers lengthways into the center of the Vienna sausages. Pat them dry with a cloth and dust them lightly with flour.
Mix the batter
Mix 120 g cornmeal, 120 g wheat flour, 1 tbsp sugar, 1/2 pack. baking powder, 1 egg, and approx. 180 ml milk into a thick batter. Pour into a tall glass.
Dip & fry
Dip each skewer completely into the batter. Fry immediately in vegetable oil heated to approx. 175 °C for 3 to 4 minutes until golden brown, turning occasionally.
Korean Corn Dogs: The viral hit with cheese pull
Korean Corn Dogs are everywhere on TikTok and Instagram! The secret: half of the skewer is loaded with sausage and half with a thick block of Miil Mozzarella. After being dipped in batter, the skewers are often rolled in panko breadcrumbs. The result is a spectacular cheese pull on the first bite!
Sauces & Dips: The Perfect Finish
It's the drizzle that truly tops off the corn dog. For a classic American style, garnish with yellow zigzag lines of Marks & Spencer Ketchup and tangy Maille Dijon Mustard. If you like it more modern, go for creamy Heinz Burger Sauce or spicy Heinz Sriracha Mix Sauce.
The Ultimate Sauce Grid Trick
Use squeeze bottles with a fine nozzle! Draw diagonal zigzag lines alternating ketchup and mustard over the fresh corn dogs. Not only does this look like it's straight from a street food truck, but it also provides the perfect balance with every bite.
