Brie is a landscape and Meaux is a city in the Seine-et-Marne department, after which the cheese was named.
Originally it was only produced there. Not much is known about its exact origin.
But due to its proximity to Paris, a number of noble names are associated with it. One of the most famous is Louis XVI. Before his execution, he only had the wish to eat a piece of his beloved Brie de Meaux again. The Brie de Meaux is produced in a family business and is awarded the Médaille d'Or at the Concours Général Agricole every year.
