Cook the pasta al dente in plenty of salted water according to package directions. Meanwhile, cut the bacon into small cubes and fry until crispy in a pan.

Finely chop the chili (use the seeds for more heat) and add to the bacon. Finely dice the shallots and also add them to the pan until translucent. Finally, slice the garlic thinly and sauté briefly.

Add the chopped tomatoes, season with salt and pepper. Stir in a few basil leaves, cover, and let the sauce simmer for about 5 - 7 minutes over medium heat.

Chef's tip

For a vegetarian version, simply omit the bacon and use a little more olive oil for frying.
