Preparation method

Melt milk and butter in a small saucepan over low heat, then let cool slightly. Finely grate the Gruyère cheese.

Sift the flour into a bowl. Add dry yeast, one egg, salt, the grated cheese, and the cooled milk-butter mixture. Knead everything into a smooth, rather firm dough. Cover the bowl with a kitchen towel and let rise in a warm place for about an hour.

Divide the risen dough into two equal parts and form each into a roll about 3 cm in diameter. Cut each roll into 25 equally sized pieces.

Chef's tip

For an extra savory note, you can sprinkle the sticks with some additional grated Gruyère before baking.
