Preparation method

First, prepare the simple syrup: Combine water and sugar in a small saucepan and stir over medium heat until the sugar is completely dissolved and the mixture becomes slightly syrupy. Let the syrup cool completely (excess syrup will keep in the refrigerator for up to a month).

Fill a glass (ideally a silver or pewter julep cup) about halfway with crushed ice.

Add 4 cl of the prepared simple syrup, the fresh mint leaves (gently muddled to release the aromas), and 60 ml Bourbon Whiskey.

Chef's tip

For the best aroma, gently muddle the mint leaves, do not crush them, as they can become bitter.

A metal julep cup keeps the drink ice-cold for a particularly long time and creates the characteristic frosty layer on the outside.
