Prepare a large pot with a steamer insert and steam the hot dog sausages for about 5 minutes until they are hot. Alternatively, the sausages can also be grilled on the grill from all sides until golden brown.
In the meantime, slice the tomatoes thinly and finely dice the onion. Halve or quarter half of the pickled gherkins lengthwise, and finely chop the other half for the relish.
