Ingredients for the Pljeskavica

  • 500 g ground beef
  • 500 g ground pork
  • 1 medium onion (finely chopped)
  • 2 garlic cloves (finely chopped)
  • 1 egg
  • 50 g breadcrumbs
  • 1 tsp sweet paprika powder
  • 1/2 tsp ground cumin
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • Salt
  • Ground black pepper
  • Gouda slices as desired (optional)

Preparation of the Meat Mixture

    In a large bowl, combine the ground beef and pork. Add the finely chopped onion, garlic, egg, breadcrumbs, as well as paprika powder, cumin, salt, and pepper.

    Knead the mixture thoroughly with your hands. If the mixture is too dry, add a splash of water or a little oil.

    Form the meat mixture into patties (Pljeskavica) about 2 cm thick. If desired, you can place a slice of Gouda in the center and enclose it with meat (stuffed Pljeskavica).

Frying and Serving

    Preheat the grill or a pan to medium heat. When frying in a pan, add a little vegetable oil.

    Grill or fry the Pljeskavica for about 4–5 minutes on each side until they are well cooked through. Alternatively, they can be baked in a preheated oven at 200 °C for 15–20 minutes. Meanwhile, cut the potatoes into wedges and roast them until golden brown in a separate pan.

    Serve the finished Pljeskavica with the roasted potatoes and a generous dollop of Ajvar.
